Hey there, HMT family! We are starting a new blog series on a common topic that affects our every day lives. That's right, we're going to talk about STRESS and STRESS MANAGEMENT.
Stress is a term we hear often, but what exactly is it? In this series, we will explore what stress is, how it can affect you, common causes of stress, common symptoms of stress, short-term vs chronic stress, effective techniques in managing stress, and when to seek help from a mental health professional. While stress is a normal part of life, understanding what it is and how it affects us is crucial for managing it effectively.
"Stress is not what happens to us. It is our response to what happens. And response is something we can choose." - Maureen Killoran
What is Stress?
Stress is your body’s response to any demand or challenge. It can be triggered by both positive and negative experiences. For instance, planning a wedding might be stressful but exciting, while facing a looming work deadline might feel overwhelming. When you perceive a threat or challenge, your body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, preparing you for a "fight or flight" response. This is your body’s natural way of protecting you.
"Stress acts as an accelerator: it will push you either forward or backward, but you choose which direction." - Chelsea Erieau
How Stress Affects You
While short-term stress can be motivating, chronic stress can lead to various health issues. It can affect your mood, your relationships, and even your physical health. Symptoms might include headaches, fatigue, irritability, and trouble sleeping. Over time, unmanaged stress can contribute to serious conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.
"The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another." - William James
In a Nutshell
Understanding stress is the first step in managing it. By recognizing when and how stress affects you, you can take preventative steps to manage it before it takes a toll on your well-being. Thank you for taking the time to read. Stayed turned for more posts in our STRESS MANAGEMENT series.
